What a visual field test checks
The test measures how well you can see in every direction. It finds blind spots or areas of reduced vision, which can be early signs of eye or neurological conditions such as:
- Glaucoma
- Optic nerve disorders
- Retinal disease
- Problems along the brain’s visual pathways (for example after a stroke or from a tumour).
How the test works
You sit at the testing machine, rest your chin on a support, and look at a fixed light in the centre. Small lights flash at different points in your side vision, and you press a button each time you see one. Each eye is tested separately, and the test takes a few minutes per eye. It is painless.
If you normally wear glasses, bring them along. Your optometrist will go through the results with you and explain what they mean.
